The imposing chteau dates back to the 9th century and was owned by Philippe le Hardi, Duke of Burgundy, for part of the 14th century. He was the one who issued a decree that forms the basis of single varietal viticulture in Burgundy, which resulted in the use of Pinot Noir instead of Gamay. Chteau de Santenay owns 90 hectares of vineyards, spread across the Cte d'Or and the Cte
